Journal of Petrology Volume 41 Number 1 Pages 1 2000
© Oxford University Press 2000

EDITORIAL

Marjorie Wilson, Executive Editor

As the new Millennium opens we look forward to the publication of two important Special Issues of the Journal in the year 2000. As has been the practice in recent years, these will appear in the normal monthly run rather than as separate issues. The first, in honour of the late Keith Cox of Oxford University, is scheduled to appear in mid-2000 and will contain a series of papers on topics closely related to those on which Keith worked during his career. Many of the papers have been contributed by his former co-workers and research students. The second will be a thematic issue on Orogenic Lherzolites, representing a selection of papers presented at a conference held from September 12–15, 1999 in Pavia, Italy. This volume will be co-edited by members of the Scientific Steering Committee of this meeting.

Throughout 1999 we have continued to achieve our goal of ensuring that papers are published within six to eight months of receipt of the final revised version of the manuscript. Submission of manuscripts to the Journal remains buoyant and far in excess of the number of papers we can actually publish each year. Inevitably this means disappointment for some authors.

Electronic publishing, via the Internet, continues to advance at a remarkable pace. Our World Wide Web site is now fully operational, giving readers whose institutions subscribe to the Journal unlimited access to electronic text versions of Journal articles, downloadable to their PC in both PDF and HTML formats. Additionally, we are encouraging authors to publish their complete data sets electronically in downloadable spreadsheet format (Excel). Whether OUP will eventually be able to offer a form of low-cost (electronic only) personal subscription to Journal of Petrology is still under review.

In our continuing attempt to encourage authors to publish colour figures we have retained our page charge costs for colour at the lowest rate of any Earth Science journal (currently £100 per page). In addition, authors can publish full colour photomicrographs and figures on the Journal of Petrology WWW site to accompany the electronic text version of their paper at no additional cost.

From January 2000 Sorena Sorensen, Else-Ragnhild Neumann and Steve Tait will be stepping down from the Editorial Board. Words are insufficient to thank them for their tremendous efforts on behalf of the Journal over the past five years. As Editor I will miss, greatly, their incisive comments and efficient handling of manuscripts. There are, however, some new faces joining the Editorial Board—Colin Devey (Universität Bremen, Germany), Matthew Thirlwall (Royal Holloway, University of London), Gareth Davies (Vrije University, Amsterdam) and Dennis Geist (University of Idaho, USA). Simon Harley (University of Edinburgh, UK) will be re-joining the Board from January as a metamorphic editor.

Finally, on behalf of the Editorial Board, I would like to thank all of those unsung heroes and heroines who reviewed manuscripts for the Journal in 1999. This is an onerous task, given the size of a typical JOP manuscript, but a vital one if we are to maintain the quality of peer review.
