Corrigendum

C. R. Manley and C. R. Bacon (2000). Rhyolite Thermobarometry and the Shallowing of the Magma Reservoir, Coso Volcanic Field, California. Journal of Petrology 41, 149–174.

There is an error in Table 2 (pp. 156–157) of the above article: the Log (Mg/Mn) values are incorrect. The correct values are printed below:

Other calculated values in the paper are still accurate, and the corrections lead to no differences in the other data of the paper. The Bacon & Hirschmann (1988) equilibrium relation for the weight ratio is shifted parallel to that for the atomic ratio, but only by 0.02 log units (because the slope is close to 1). In other words, strictly speaking, the two equilibrium envelopes are not equivalent, but the difference is insignificant; none of the corrected oxide pairs fall significantly nearer or further from equilibrium.

This is also borne out by the QUILF calculations, which indicate nearness to equilibrium by an independent method, and which agree with the results of the Bacon & Hirschmann test on correct as well as incorrect Log(Mg/Mn) values.

None of the paper’s conclusions are affected by this correction.
