Editorial 2002
Submission of manuscripts covering a broad spectrum of igneous, metamorphic and experimental petrology topics remains buoyant and far in excess of the number of papers we can actually publish each year. Inevitably this means disappointment for some authors. Throughout 2001 we have continued to achieve our goal of ensuring that papers are published within six to eight months of receipt of the final revised version of the manuscript. From time to time, the publication of thematic issues may result in a small extension of this time and we thank authors for their patience.Although there have been modest increases to the subscription price of the Journal in recent years, there have been more printed pages and the cost remains low in comparison other mainstream Earth Science journals. Authors can help to minimize our costs, and therefore the price of the Journal, by carefully following the Instructions to Authors in the preparation of their manuscripts, particularly the electronic files. These instructions have been recently revised and may be found on the Journal of Petrology Web site at http://www.petrology.oupjournals.org. We believe that attention to detail is important if a high quality finished product is to be maintained.
The most recent (2000) ISI Impact Factors for journal citations have confirmed that Journal of Petrology remains the premier journal in the field of petrology (Journal of Petrology 3.072; Earth & Planetary Science Letters 2.882; Geochimicaet Cosmochimica Acta 2.534; Contributions to Mineralogy & Petrology 2.341; Lithos 2.074; Journal of Metamorphic Geology 1.960), ranking sixth in the entire field of Geochemistry & Geophysics, Geology and Geosciences journals.
Electronic publishing, via the Internet, continues to advance at a remarkable pace. For readers whose institutions subscribe to the Journal, our Web site gives unlimited access to electronic text versions of Journal articles and complete datasets, respectively downloadable in both PDF and HTML formats and as Excel spreadsheets. We are currently reviewing a range of online options for authors to submit manuscripts for consideration for publication.
In our continuing attempt to encourage authors to publish colour figures we have retained our page charge costs for colour at the lowest rate of any Earth Science journal (currently £100 per page). In addition, at no additional cost, authors can publish on the Journal of Petrology Web site full colour photomicrographs and figures to accompany the electronic text version of their paper
Finally, on behalf of the Editorial Board, I would like to thank all of those unsung heroes and heroines who reviewed manuscripts for the Journal in 2001. This is an onerous task, given the size of a typical JOP manuscript, but a vital one if we are to maintain the quality of peer review. I would also like to express my personal thanks to the members of the Editorial and Advisory Boards for all their hard work on behalf of the Journal.
Alastair Lumsden has now completed his first full year as my Editorial Assistant, working hard behind the scenes in conjunction with our Copy Editor, Joyce Weddell and Production Editor, Jacquie Gunn. My task as Executive Editor would be impossible without their support, which is much appreciated.
